Health and Fitness

"This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." (Proverbs 3:8 NIV)

On Sunday, February 17th, David Bauer of FBCG spoke at our Single Moms Brunch. David is a gifted musician and serves in our praise ministry at FBCG. He is also the owner of Integrated Fitness and is a Health and Wellness Expert as well as a Certified Personal Trainer.

David's presentation was "Health and Fitness for Busy Single Moms"

If you looked into the West Campus Alpha Room that morning you might have thought an exercise class was going on! After we enjoyed a healthy (well, sort of) brunch, David taught us what he calls "The Super Eight." It wasn't too far into his presentation that he had all 20+ of us doing squats! Errr... we won't mention any crackling noises.

The Super Eight consists of doing the following exercises at least 2 times per week...

  • Squats

  • Rows

  • Pulldowns or Pullups

  • Push Ups or Chest Press

  • Shoulder Press

  • Crunches

  • Woodchoppers

  • Planks

He suggested that we do 12-20 reps of each exercise in rotation at least 2 x week. A very doable feat, even for busy Single Moms.

David showed us how we could create a very inexpensive "Home Gym" by simply having the following exercise equipment...

  • Swiss Ball

  • Tubing

  • Hand Weights ranging in weight from 3 - 10 pounds

He showed us how to do a variety of exercises using these tools and none of them take very long at all. All of them can be purchased at the following places....

  • Target

  • Walmart

  • Meijer

  • Sport Authority

  • Dicks Sporting Goods

  • MC Sports

David said that if we don't have time to exercise for 30 minutes at once, it's still effective to break our exercise up into 10 minutes increments 3 x day. One way to motivate yourself to stop and exercise for 10 minutes is to set a timer and go to it. Anyone can do just about anything (even things they don't enjoy) for 10 minutes! Hopefully, though, you'll start enjoying your 10 minute "energy breaks".

David talked about how vitally important exercise is to maintaining our overall health. While we all probably know that to be true, it's tough to prioritize ourselves when we have so many demands on our time. One of his suggestions was to team up with another mom or small group of moms and exercise together. Doing this creates accountability, not to mention other benefits which come from exercising together including motivation, encouragement and developing friendships.

David said exercise is SO important that in truth, we absolutely HAVE to find time for it. It's really not an option if we want to live healthy lives and be there for our children and grandchildren.

At the end of an excellent presentation, David generously offered to answer any questions via this Web site.
